SFR의 금속핵연료와 피복관은 화학적 상호작용으로 열화현상이 일어나 손상될 수 있다. 이를 막기 위해 일반적으로 크롬이 포함된 수용액을 피복관 내부에 넣고 전기분해 방식으로 피복관에 코팅층을 만든다.
하지만 기존 크롬 코팅에 활용하던 직류나 펄스 전해도금 방식은 한 방향으로만 전류가 흘러 물이 분해돼 발생한 수소나 불순물이 코팅층에 포함되고, 코팅층의 균일성이 떨어졌다. 이로 인해 코팅층에 균열이 발생하고, 핵연료와 피복관의 FCCI 반응이 발행했다.
